A Failed Entertainment is a four-act exhibit by Phoenix artists Mark Dudlik, Jon Garza, Sebastien Millon and Safwat Saleem. Part tragedy, part comedy and part poor craftsmanship, it is a modern retelling of ancient fables about our primal desires and fears. Much like William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, A Failed Entertainment is capable of seemingly endless adaptations by others…even though it is just a silly art exhibit.

Act I: Pen & Pandas by Mark Dudlik
Taking terrible drawings to new heights, Mark explores the many ways one can draw a panda and still not really capture the adorableness of the world’s greatest argument against evolution.

Act II: Mi Vida Tex Mex by Jon Garza
Through hand crafted typography, bright ass color palettes, and shitty scrap wood, the artist portrays the interesting blend of Mexican and Texan cultures that influenced his San Antonio, Texas upbringing, all while also paying homage to the hard work ethic, creativity, and lack of resources the original sign painters of his hometown possessed.

Act III: Bunnies, Bombs, and Flowers by Sebastien Millon
Life is full of important awesome things. Like bunnies, bombs, and flowers. And wolves eating children. And cows with serious psychological issues. And Drunky Bear’s broken rainbow…

Act IV: OH SHIT! by Safwat Saleem
A fitting finale, OH SHIT!, through a series of prints, captures the feeling of dread when you know you’re fucked as you stare into the dark eyes of death…or when you realize you don’t have any clean underwear right before an important meeting.

A Failed Entertainment, a part of the Phoenix Design Week, shows at monOrchid gallery (214 E Roosevelt in downtown Phoenix) on Friday, October 7, 2011 from 7pm to 10pm. Then, weekday viewing from 9-5 (or by special appointment) until October 18th.

Also, almost everything in this description is inaccurate and fabricated, but you should come see the exhibit anyway.

What if? That question has haunted creatives far more than a blank page or even the toughest of clients.

The AdLibs exhibition of Phoenix Design Week[s] 2011 paired up six designers with six writers ready to explore the unknown — aka unrestricted creativity. Participants had no idea who they would be paired up with and were only given the direction that they work on a specific product category.

Check out the north side of the CO+HOOTS building from Oct 5th – 18th to find out what can happen when you get rid of creative restrictions, work with someone new and step out of the world you spend more than 40 hours a week in.

Calle 16 is a project initiated by Barrio cafe Silvana Salcido Esparza to respond to the current cultural and political climate in Phoenix through positive action in the form of arts, music and food. We are hosting a gallery show, artist discussion and tour of the project for locals and visitors. Attendees will be able to physically participate in the creation of the newest mural in the project alongside local muralists. Also included is a map of the mural alley and zones of Phoenix where our best artists are speaking to the community through street art.
Friday, October 14th, will be a gallery show and party. Sunday, October 16th will be participatory for all who wish to attend and paint.

We’ve been talking about it, now we are bringing to the stage. The Torch Theatre puts these worlds together for a night of design oriented longform improv comedy.

At 8:30 pm, Marc Oxborrow joins The Foundation on stage for The Neighborhood. The Neighborhood takes a special guest monologist from Phoenix’s arts, music, and culture scene and their real-life stories inspire improvised scenes and characters to create a comedic performance of epic proportions. The cast of the show, The Foundation, is a supersquad of some of the best, funniest, and most attractive improvisors in Arizona, who also happen to be the founders and faculty of The Torch Theatre.
At 10:30 it gets a little more cut throat in Cagematch. Local creatives Andrew Coppolla, Nina Miller, David Cosand, Safwat Saleem, Austin Baker and Rachel Tullio take the stage as “Portfolio Review.” They will pin up design work on the walls, and you can add yours too! Bring in print outs of rejected work, class work, or any kind of work whether you are proud or ashamed. The players will use it to inspire the stories and scenes on stage. Cagematch means they will face another improv team – the champions from the week before – head to head, fighting for the audience votes. Win or lose, improv and design are winners in the end.

Perception is an idea that exists only to the point where the perceiver and perceived come together. At the point where two parties converge old ideas are shed and new worlds are uncovered.
